RMI has just reported that First Ascent guide Seth Waterfall, Michael Brown, Casey Grom and Scott Jones have returned to Base Camp after a night at Camp II. First Ascent guide Dave Hahn and Leif Whittaker spent the night at Camp IV after summiting, are currently at Camp II, and will arrive at Base Camp tomorrow.
On May 1, Eddie Bauer celebrated its 90th anniversary by cutting the ribbon on its newly constructed archive room. The museum-style opening included guests such as American climbing legend Jim Whittaker and First Ascent guides Ed Viesturs and Peter Whittaker. The archives showcase the rich history of Eddie Bauer, the man, his passion for the outdoors and the many American expeditions the company outfitted throughout the last 90 years, including last year’s First Ascent Everest Expedition. Outside readers entered the Expedition of a Lifetime contest to win a five-day climbing expedition of Mt. Rainier with legendary guides, Ed Viesturs and Peter Whittaker plus First Ascent gear. Entrants were required to submit a 250-word, adventure resume, a 300-500 word essay describing why they qualify for the expedition of a lifetime, and a five minute video that demonstrated their thirst for adventure.

• Follow the four-second rule. “There are zillions of zippers out there. Here’s how you choose: If it takes you longer than four seconds to get your jacket zipped, it’s not going to work on the mountain. Try another zipper – or if you’re a consumer in the store, try another jacket.”
• Strip away the doodads. “Most new, whiz-bang features just get in the way. You don’t need a pocket on your forearm when you have a Napoleon pocket. And I have no idea why glove designers insist on putting that webbing loop on the back of the middle finger. Jim and Peter Whittaker were in Denver last week to support the launch of First Ascent. They made an appearance on KUSA-TV, the Denver NBC affiliate, to discuss how mountaineering has evolved over the years, from when Jim summited in 1963 to when Peter returned in First Ascent gear in May of 2009.
First Ascent guides Dave Hahn and Peter Whittaker appeared on KUSA-TV, the Denver NBC affiliate, last week. In town to speak with Eddie Bauer customers and media about First Ascent, Dave and Peter highlighted the strengths of developing a line of guide built gear from the ground up.
