I see from the Photos that Ed was climbing on oxygen? I thought he was originally planning to climb without oxygen? What changed this decision? Was it a case of the extra day spent at CIV or did Ed start out without O2 but wasn’t feeling great so switched the O2 on?
Great job to Peter, Ed and the rest of the team on the climb. Hope to see some more fantastic coverage on here. Get down safe. Best of luck to team Hahn. Climb high, stay safe.
I noticed the O2 on everyone as well. Was it the extra cold conditions. Lots of climbers. I counted 21 in the wide shot of the climb. Great work and lets get the next team to the top.
Really great photography, thanks Jake. The one of Peter and Pasang below the summit is great, and also I really like the one of Peter below the south summit.
Excellent work, photos are fantastic. Ed’s obviously got nothing to prove so if a little O2 is the difference between keeping or losing some flesh I say go for it. I got to say the photos definitely show just how exposed and scary that top section is. Bravo.
Wow! The photos are freaking awesome!!! Again, fantastic job Peter and Ed for making it to the top! Peter, have you heard anything out of your father or your Uncle Jim wishing you congrats. on making it to the top yet?
Good job making it to the top hope its all what you expected it to be and have safe trip back down and hopefully you will climb more mountains and keep us posted just as well as you did this trip
good job up their, guess
you pulled the trigger at
the right time!!!!
What awesome photos!!!!!!! O2 or no O2 we here at R250 are very impressed! We leave the photo up all day so everyone can see it when they start their shift. Way to go! I must admit looking at the photos from the top of the world did bring out my burried fear of heights!Yikes! Way to go guys and kudos to the photographer!
Over on greatoutdoors.com Ed has some satellite phone updates that were posted. There he mentioned the following regarding the O2
“Hey everybody, I just wanted to let you know as well that something I didn’t mention right off the bat was I did make my ascent using supplemental oxygen. I kinda came to that decision after we had … 6000 feet, and knowing that the next day would be rather cold and windy, as a safety issue I felt it would be better to stay with the team and use supplemental oxygen. So it was more based on safety, and sticking with my group. So I kind of compromised my ascent but it still worked out well. And thankfully the oxygen kept all of us warmer during our ascent and made our climb a little bit faster. So that’s the way it goes. Sorry I forgot to mention that earlier. I did want to iterate that today as I pulled my thoughts together after the climb. So, thanks for that.”
I think it was a smart decision on his part. It’s not like he has anything to prove and it’s more important for him to remain with the team and give himself the greatest margin of safety.
What excitement, following your First Ascent team on there first escent. Congratulations, I have been following from the begining, great accomplishment I am still excited for the other’s to carry on with this success. Wonderful pic’s, I have to make a comment on the one picture in the Ed and Peter’s summit pic’s, it is the second photo, if you look close to the right of the climber in the drifted snow area it looks to be a face of a person, who ever the face I believe it is the face of Everest and it looks content. Looking forward to more great things from First Ascent.4MyGirls
I had wondered as well when I saw the pics of Ed wearing the O2 mask. I was following the climb through postings during that day, and I had noticed that Ed seemed to be about an hour behind at the south summit. But then he summited only about a half hour after Peter. I figured then, after seeing the O2 mask, that he had made the decision during the summit climb to switch on and therefore was able to catch up. One of the above posts implies that he had started out with O2. Either way, it’s still a great achievement, not lessened in the least by use of supplemental O2. The pics also show me that I’ll probably always be a “wannabe” and never see it for myself.

The photos are fabulous near the top. The lighting is excellent. I am wondering what camera and lense the photographer used. How about a filter?
